Middle School

The Middle School phase at EBIS builds on the strong foundations established in the Primary years and supports students as they grow into confident, independent and responsible learners. During these important years, students deepen their academic knowledge, strengthen critical thinking skills and begin to take greater ownership of their learning.

Our Middle School curriculum provides a broad and balanced education that combines strong academic expectations with opportunities for creativity, exploration and personal development. Through high-quality teaching, meaningful learning experiences and strong relationships between staff and students, we aim to ensure that every student feels supported, challenged and inspired to achieve their full potential.

A Supportive and Ambitious Learning Environment

At EBIS we believe that students achieve their best when they feel safe, valued and confident within their learning environment. Middle School classrooms are characterised by positive relationships between students and staff, clear expectations and a calm, purposeful atmosphere that supports effective learning.

Safeguarding and wellbeing are central to school life. All staff are trained in safeguarding procedures and work collaboratively to ensure that students feel safe, supported and respected. Clear routines and consistent expectations help create a structured environment where students can focus on their learning and develop strong habits for success.

A dedicated pastoral team supports students throughout their Middle School journey. Tutors and pastoral leaders work closely with students to support their wellbeing, personal development and sense of belonging. During these years, students experience significant academic and personal growth, and our pastoral provision ensures they feel supported as they navigate these changes.1

As students progress through Middle School, they are encouraged to take increasing responsibility for their learning, behaviour and contribution to the school community.

A Broad and Balanced Curriculum

The Middle School curriculum at EBIS follows the English National Curriculum and prepares students with the knowledge, skills and learning habits needed for the next stage of their education. Our curriculum reflects the strengths of British education while also recognising the importance of the local Egyptian context.

Students study a wide range of subjects including:

English
 Mathematics
 Science
 Humanities (History and Geography)
 Global Perspectives
 Computing
 Art
 Music
 Physical Education
 Enrichment

Alongside these subjects, students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development is supported across the curriculum and through the wider life of the school. Through assemblies, tutor programmes, curriculum discussions and enrichment opportunities, students are encouraged to reflect on values, develop empathy and understand their responsibilities within both the school community and the wider world.

Alongside the British curriculum, students also study Ministry of Education subjects including Arabic, Egyptian Social Studies and Religion. These subjects ensure students develop an understanding of language, culture and the society in which they live.

The curriculum is carefully sequenced so that knowledge and skills build progressively across the Middle School years. Lessons connect new learning to prior knowledge, helping students develop deeper understanding over time.

In English and Mathematics, students are taught in streamed sets. This allows teachers to tailor instruction to students’ current levels of understanding while maintaining high expectations for progress and challenge.

Specialist Teaching and Learning Spaces

Middle School students benefit from specialist teachers across the curriculum, ensuring that learning is supported by strong subject expertise.

Students learn in a range of specialist environments designed to support practical learning and deeper subject engagement, including:

Science laboratories
 Art studios
 Music rooms
 Computing suites
 Indoor and outdoor sports facilities

Science laboratories allow students to investigate scientific concepts through experimentation and enquiry. Art studios provide space for creativity and artistic exploration, while music rooms support performance, composition and instrumental learning. Physical Education lessons take place across a range of sporting facilities where students develop fitness, teamwork and resilience.

These environments enrich the learning experience and allow students to develop practical skills alongside academic knowledge.

Language Pathways and International Connections

As an international school, EBIS recognises the importance of language learning in developing communication skills, cultural awareness and global understanding.

Middle School students continue their language pathway by studying French or German alongside English and Arabic. Specialist teachers support students in developing confidence across speaking, listening, reading and writing while introducing them to the culture and traditions of the countries where these languages are spoken.

EBIS also benefits from partnerships with the French and German Institutes, providing opportunities for students to engage in cultural events and initiatives that enrich language learning and strengthen international connections.

High-Quality Teaching and Learning

Teaching at EBIS is designed to ensure that every student is supported and challenged in their learning. Lessons are carefully planned with clear learning objectives, structured explanations and opportunities for students to practise and apply their knowledge.

Teachers use adaptive teaching strategies to respond to different learning needs while maintaining high expectations for all students. Questioning, discussion and collaborative activities encourage students to think critically, explain their ideas and engage actively in their learning.

Regular assessment allows teachers to monitor progress and identify next steps in learning, ensuring that teaching remains responsive and that students continue to make strong academic progress.

Holistic Development and SMSC

Education at EBIS extends beyond academic success. We are committed to supporting the holistic development of every student through our focus on spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

Through assemblies, tutor programmes, curriculum learning and enrichment activities, students explore values such as respect, responsibility and empathy. They are encouraged to reflect on their actions, understand different perspectives and develop a strong sense of community.

These experiences help students develop the character, confidence and social awareness needed to thrive both within and beyond school.

Enrichment and Co-Curricular Opportunities

Enrichment plays an important role in Middle School life. Students are encouraged to explore their interests, develop new skills and build confidence beyond the classroom.

Many enrichment experiences are integrated into the school day through performances, themed learning events, enterprise activities and cultural celebrations.

Students can also participate in a wide range of after-school activities through the Squads programme, which includes sport, music and other interest-based clubs. These opportunities allow students to develop teamwork, leadership and creativity while enjoying learning beyond the curriculum.

External Competitions and Performance Opportunities

Middle School students regularly represent EBIS in external competitions and events. Participation in sports tournaments, performances and creative exhibitions allows students to challenge themselves, celebrate their talents and develop confidence in a wider community.

These experiences encourage perseverance, teamwork and pride in representing the school.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Learning is enriched through educational visits, residential experiences and international trips.

Overnight residential trips provide opportunities for students to develop independence, teamwork and resilience while building stronger relationships with their peers.

International trips allow students to experience new cultures and environments, helping them develop a broader understanding of the world and their place within it.

These experiences bring learning to life and play an important role in students’ personal development.

Careers Education and Future Pathways

As students progress through Middle School, they begin to explore their interests, strengths and future aspirations.

Through careers education and guidance, students are introduced to different career pathways and develop an understanding of how their learning connects to the wider world. These early experiences help students develop ambition, curiosity and a sense of purpose in their education.

Additional Support and Inclusive Practice

At EBIS we believe that every student should be able to access learning and experience success.

Teachers work closely with support staff to ensure that students receive the guidance they need within the classroom. Adaptive teaching, targeted support and small group interventions help ensure that all students continue to make progress and feel confident in their learning.

Our inclusive approach ensures that high expectations are maintained while recognising the individual needs of each learner.

Strong Partnerships with Parents

Strong partnerships between school and home play an important role in supporting students throughout the Middle School years. Parents are valued members of our school community and are actively involved in their child’s learning journey.

Communication with families is supported through a number of platforms. Engage provides parents with access to attendance, reports and key academic information, while Class Dojo allows teachers to share updates from the classroom and celebrate the learning taking place across the school. Through the Class Dojo story feature, parents are able to see examples of student learning and activities as they happen.

Parents are also invited to attend parent workshops, which provide guidance on supporting learning, wellbeing and study skills during the Middle School years.

Parent voice is an important part of school development. Parent feedback surveys help the school understand the experiences of families and inform school improvement planning. In addition, the Parent Council provides a forum for collaboration between parent representatives and school leadership, strengthening communication and partnership across the school community.

Preparing Students for the Next Stage

The Middle School years prepare students for the increased academic challenge and responsibility of the next stage of their education.

By the end of Year 9, students have developed strong foundations in literacy, numeracy and critical thinking alongside the independence and organisational skills required for future success. They leave Middle School as confident learners who are able to think critically, communicate effectively and take responsibility for their learning.

Above all, our aim is that students leave Middle School with curiosity, resilience and confidence — ready to embrace the opportunities that lie ahead.
